Committee 2016-17

Jack Dye – Presidentjack bio

Hello! I’m Jack, the President of the Newcastle University Badminton Club for this year. I’m currently in my fourth year studying Medicine and I’m really excited about having another incredible year at Newcastle, with the wonderful people that make up the badminton club. Badminton is one of the performance sports at Newcastle, meaning that the university invests in us to ensure we continue to deliver great results. We run 4 squads, 2 Men’s and 2 Women’s and it’s my job to coordinate the club and to make sure everyone has the means to develop and play to the best of their ability, with the aim of getting all 4 teams promoted this season. Socially, NUBC is one of the friendliest and most diverse clubs in the university, and with the huge number of varied social activities we do as a club, I hope to ensure that everyone has as much fun as I have over my time at university. We welcome players of all abilities, with our wonderful social secretaries running a social session for our non-squad players, too! I’m really confident that along with my incredible committee, we can all make this season as fantastic as ever!

Maria Hall   – Vice President and Women’s 1st Team Captain

Hello! I’m Maria and I’m taking on the role of NUBC’s Vice President and Women’s 1st Team captain this year. I’m in my fourth year studying Medicine and loving every second of it. Badminton has been such a huge part of my university life, from the training sessions to BUCs matches, and of course the socials. My main roles for the year as Vice President are to run the publicity side of the club, as well as helping to arrange kit for the teams and T-shirts for the social players. On top of this, I have the wonderful job of maintaining our links with Leeds and Edinburgh Universities with the Read and Osuna friendly matches – something that we deem very important; we like to be known as a friendly and all inclusive club. Due to the size of the club, I also attempt to help the other members of the committee in any way that I can. As 1st Team Captain ,I’m really looking forward to next season and hopefully it will be just as great of a success as the last. I really hope we have a fantastic year and aim for us to finish as high as possible in the league.

 Frances  Bingham – Treasurer

Heyya I’m Frances, a second year maths student and I am excited to say I will be the treasurer this year for NUBC. My main job will be looking after the clubs finances, claims forms and making sure we don’t run out of money!

Being a part of the team has been amazing and I hope I can help to make 2016/2017 even better. Badminton is an amazing society for all abilities, whether social or competitive, so please come along and get involved.

Claudia Heggie – Secretary

Hi, I’m Claudia, a fifth year dental student and the secretary of NUBC this season. My job is organising all the fixtures, timetables and social media, and generally making sure everyone knows where they’re meant to be. NUBC has been a huge part of my university life having captained the squad and been president and secretary of the club. If you enjoy playing Badminton on any level, we would love to show you why we all love our club so please come and get involved!

Michael Taylor – Men’s 1st Team Captain

Hello! I’m Michael, a second year physiology student and the men’s first team captain for this year. Being part of the badminton club has definitely one of the best things about university for myself: playing for the uni in BUCS matches, enjoying a good social event or two, in addition to meeting many brilliant people who all love the sport. I have played badminton for far too long, representing Lincolnshire and playing on the national circuit before arriving here in Newcastle. As captain, my aims for this season are to get the first team promoted back to where we belong, in addition to handing Northumbria a beating, as we have ended up in the same league (unfortunately for them). Whether you are looking to earn a place in one of the teams or not, we welcome all standards and it would be great to have as many of you as possible joining us in the NUBC this year.

 Victoria Spencer – Social Sec

Hi I’m Vic and I’m one of the three social secs for this year! I am a second year Marketing and Management student from a village near Burnley. Badminton had been a huge part of my university and have loved playing for the new women’s second team. Hello, I’m Emma and I’m one of your 3 Social Secs for Badminton this year! I’m studying a Masters in Computer Science after finishing a 3 year Geography course at Newcastle – I couldn’t face leaving university and the Badminton Club just yet. I have played in the Womens squad since I joined as a fresher in 2013 and the Badminton club has definitely been the most enjoyable part of my university life so far! This year myself, Vic and Becky will make sure all of you have a great time as part of the Badminton Club, from sports nights out to our court sessions 3-5pm every Saturday. We have some great new deals for this year and everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun! We will keep you updated throughout the year via emails and Facebook so keep your eyes peeled, and we are always open to suggestions to make the social side of Badminton even better! Looking forward to meeting lots of new (and old) faces this year so come along and join in with one of the best clubs at Newcastle!
